A view of the bronze copy of the Capitoline Wolf, symbol of the founding of Rome, with the figures of Romulus and Remus suckled by a she-wolf, near the side facade of the Palazzo Senatorio in the Campidoglio (Roman Capitol), on the Capitoline Hill, in the historic core of Rome. The Palazzo Senatorio was built between the 12th and 13th centuries on the ruins of the Tabularium, a building used in Ancient Rome to keep historical and state documents. It was renovated during the 16th century based on a design by Michelangelo Buonarroti and later by the architect Giacomo Della Porta. Since 1144 it has been the seat of the Municipality of Rome. Considered by the ancient Romans a sacred and indestructible place, the Roman Capitol has always represented one of the most symbolic places of the Roman Forums, as well as the nerve center of the entire Roman civilization. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Image in high definition format.
