The Palazzo Senatorio was built between the 12th and 13th centuries on the ruins of the Tabularium, a building used in Ancient Rome to keep historical and state documents. It was renovated during the 16th century based on a design by Michelangelo Buonarroti and later by the architect Giacomo Della Porta. Since 1144 it has been the seat of the Municipality of Rome.
