Plaza San Martín - San Martín Square - Plaza General San Martín (Buenos Aires) is the main green space in the Retiro neighborhood in Buenos Aires. Inaugurated in 1862 where a bullring had previously existed, it was declared a National Historic Site in 1942. It is surrounded by Santa Fe Avenue, Esmeralda, Arenales, Maipú streets, Libertador Avenue, Florida street and San Martín street. The equestrian monument of Giuseppe Garibaldi, hero of the Unification and Independence of Italy during the wars of the nineteenth century, on top of the gardens of the Janiculum hill. From this hill, located on the right bank of the Tiber river, it is possible to admire a series of spectacular views over the historic center of Rome and the famous Trastevere district, up to the central Appenine mountains. This equestrian statue was made by the sculptor Emilio Gallori and was inaugurated on 20 September 1895. Image in High Definition format.
