The family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles, is a family of insects in the order Coleoptera.[2] There are more than 26,000 known species found worldwide, with slightly more than half found in the Old World. These species are primarily herbivores, and include several serious pests. Larvae of these species bore into wood, damaging not only trees but also wooden structures. The North American house beetle (Hylotrupes bajulus) is particularly problematic indoors. Several species mimic other species, such as ants, bees, and wasps, although most rely on camouflage. The Titanus giganteus from northeastern South America is generally considered the largest longhorn beetle (but not the heaviest, and not the longest when measured with legs included), with the largest known length reaching 16.7 cm (6.6 in).[3] All species of the family Cerambycidae undergo complete metamorphosis, and their life cycle goes through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult's body is long and thin, and its antennae, legs, and a pair of large mandibles are very conspicuous.
