Native to Japan, Korea and China, Ligustrum obtusifolium, commonly called border privet, is a perennial, deciduous shrub, which grows to 3 meters in height and has many stemmed branches. White flowers appear in June and fruits appear in September and persist into winter.

Celastrina argiolus is a common resident in the Netherlands. The species is distributed in a great part of Europe, except Scotland and Northern Scandinavia. It occurs in a variety of habitats, even in City centres. The larval food plants differ between the spring and summer generation. In Spring, the females often lay their eggs on Rhamnus frangula and Ilex aquifolium. In summer, they tend to use later flowering species like Hedera helix, Calluna vulgaris or Lythrum salicaria. Holly Blue flies in two generations from mid-April until end-August and hibernates as pupa. During the 20th century numbers probably remained stable.

This butterfly is widely distributed throughout southern areas wherever there are oak trees; even a solitary tree may support a colony. It is frequently overlooked as adults remain largely in the canopy where the main adult food source is honeydew; they fly more commonly in the evening of a warm summer's day. They are only driven down to seek fluid and nectar during prolonged drought.

Maculinea alcon is a fairly rare resident in the Netherlands. The Dutch Monitor Scheme shows a steep decline in numbers after 1997. The number of populations fell from 160 in 1990 to 90 in 2000. This continual decline is related to the deterioration of the Habitat and the degree of isolation of the populations.
