This vintage engraving from a 15th century manuscript depicts the epic battle for Jerusalem led by Charlemagne, King of Franks (742 - 814) in the Crusades of the Middle Ages. He is often regarded as the Father of Europe. Engraved by an unknown artist, it was published in an 1878 history of the Middle Ages and is now in the public domain.

The fortification was designed to guard the entrance to San Juan bay. In 1983, the citadel was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe: Saint-John-Perse Museum (Departmental Museum) - houses a permanent exhibition on Creole costumes and on the poet and diplomat Saint-John Perse (pen name of Alexis Leger), Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1960, whose texts are strongly marked by his time in Guadeloupe - 'Souques-Pagès' villa, where the owners of the Darboussier sugar factory once resided, built in 1880, the building has a metal and brick structure, probably designed as a kit by the Gustave Eiffel workshops for a Louisiana planter. The ship which transported the elements was wrecked in Guadeloupe and the recovered elements were sold at auction - Nozières Street.
