The Hornbek Ranch at the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument is a perfect example of an old mountain ranch, complete with log home and outbuildings, wagons and a split rail fence, with the Rocky Mountains as a backdrop. Adeline Hornbek moved her four children here in the 1870's after losing two husbands. She was regarded as a woman ahead of her time, filing claim for 160 acres in the Florissant valley and building a ranch with stables and over $4,000 worth of livestock, all while holding down a job at the local general store.
This is by far the best of the houses near the 'Chinese Village' in Arrowtown, New Zealand. Chinese gold miners flocked to the Arrowtown area and set up a small chinese community of miners, the walk which passes these homes is popular with visitors.

Columbia, California: 04/10/2024 - Columbia Historic District is a state park and National Landmark District preserving historic downtown Columbia, California. The 30 buildings were built during the California Gold Rush. Located in the California Mother Lode, this Gold Rush town is a living museum with the largest collection of preserved buildings in the state.
USA, State of Utah, Washington County, town of Grafton. The Alonzo H. Russel's home (about 1862) and the church/schoolhouse. Grafton is a ghost town near the Zion National Park. The site was first settled in December 1859 as part of a cotton-growing project ordered by Brigham Young (president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1847 to 1877). After a flood of the Virgin River, that had destroyed the first town (called Wheeler), a new town, called New Grafton, was built upstream. In 1866 some settlers were killed by Navajo raiders. Besides that, more than thirty people (including many children) died of diseases such as diphtheria, scarlet fever, or accident. So a lot of Grafton's residents moved to Rockville. In 1890 only four families remained. In 1921, the local branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was discontinued. Grafton was permanently abandoned in 1944. In 1997, a restoration project started to preserve the Grafton site. The old church, some houses, and the fence of Berry's grave in the cemetery were restored. In the cemetery it's believed about 80 graves exist. In the center of the cemetery there is the restored fence of Robert Madison Berry (24 years old), his wife Mary Isabella Hales Berry (20) and his brother Joseph Smith Berry (22), killed by Indians. Grafton has been featured as a location in several films.

Dilapidated Old Western Log Cabin
On June 18, 2021 while visiting Custer State Park in South Dakota we ventured upon an abandoned house in the park. It stands alone amongst the grazing grounds of the Buffalo. The meadows and mountains reflect a peace and calm many seek.
William Brolliar was born in 1867 and spent his early years working at various ranches throughout the West. In 1910 he applied for a homesteading permit on a tract of land north of Mormon Lake, Arizona in what is now the Coconino National Forest. Initially living in a tent, Brolliar built a log cabin using local material. The rough-hewn structure would be his home for the next 25 years. Brolliar's life on the homestead was one of hard work and self-sufficiency. Despite the challenges of frontier life, Brolliar thrived in his chosen solitude. He raised cattle, planted crops, and harvested timber for construction. He also served as a local mail carrier, delivering letters and supplies to neighboring ranchers. In 1936, at the age of 69, Brolliar sold his homestead and moved to nearby Flagstaff. He passed away in 1944, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and self-reliance. Today, the Brolliar Park Cabin stands as a silent reminder of this remarkable individual and the pioneering era he represents.
