Watchtower on the northwestern part of the Greek Island of Chios in the Aegean Sea built between 1346 and 1666 by Genovese rulers. The towers, 24 in all, stood 12 meters high and about 4 km apart. The function was to watch for pirates and other enemies and alarm the island population. From the fortification and Viglas (watchtowers) communication was performed with smoke signals during the day and fire signals during the night to alert neighbouring towers (and villages).
