$Cartagena is a land with a history of fighting, armed, pirates and corsairs. It is a city therefore with a lot of defensive constructions of those times. The Battery of San José is one of the four coastal batteries that was built to reinforce the defense of the area.\nSan José was built by a Spanish military engineer named Juan de Herrera y Sotomayor, the same one who took care of all the repairs to the fortifications of Cartagena after the attack of the French in 1697. At first this battery was a square base with a triangular ledge on the front of the islet which housed a powder store.\nIts first function was to close the channel of Bocachica in joint action with Fort San Fernando de Bocahica. After the city was attacked again in 1741 by the English, this was the only battery that was repaired and even expanded (between 1751 and 1759), adding a secondary battery at sea level and another on the level of the first.\nThe new Battery Fort of San José then had a body of vaults, a raised water tank and a powder keg, with a weapons punch of 21 cannons. Years later a submerged jetty was added to prevent enemy boats from approaching and exploiting it.\nThe site was restored in 1960 and since then anyone who wishes can visit it.$
