A twilight view over Piazza del Popolo seen from the viewpoint of the Pincio Gardens in Villa Borghese, in the historic heart of Rome. In neoclassical style, the current elliptical shape of Piazza del Popolo is the work of the Roman architect and urban planner Giuseppe Valadier, who in the early 19th century redesigned the entire square and the large central fountain, relocating an Egyptian obelisk that was transported to Rome by the emperor Augustus to embellish the Circus Maximus and present in this square since 1589. On the left the two twin churches of Santa Maria in Montesanto and Santa Maria dei Miracoli. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. The Capitoline Hill, between the Forum and the Campus Martius, is one of the seven hills of Rome. By the 16th century, Capitolinus had become Campidoglio in Italian. The English word capitol derives from Capitoline. The Capitoline contains few ancient ground-level ruins, as they are almost entirely covered up by Medieval and Renaissance palaces (now housing the Capitoline Museums) that surround a piazza, a significant urban plan designed by Michelangelo. Rome, Italy, February 10 -- A warm ray of sun at sunset illuminates the Fontana della Barcaccia near the monumental stairway of Trinità dei Monti, or Spanish Steps, in the baroque heart of Rome. This iconic fountain in Rome was finished in 1629 by the architect and sculptor Pietro Bernini, father of the more famous Gian Lorenzo Bernini, commissioned by Pope Urban VIII. According to tradition, Gian Lorenzo himself participated in the final construction of the fountain on the death of his father in 1629. A masterpiece of the late Roman Baroque, the monumental stairway of the Trinità dei Monti (Spanish Steps) was built in 1721 to connect the church of the Santissima Trinità dei Monti (top in the photo) with the Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Square). Designed by the architect and urban planner Francesco De Sanctis, the Spanish Steps were inaugurated by Pope Benedict XIII on the occasion of the Jubilee of 1725. Built starting from 1502 in the Renaissance style, the church of the Santissima Trinità dei Monti was commissioned by Charles VIII, King of France, to give a stable accommodation to the religious Order of the Minims. In 1570 the façade was rebuilt based on a design by the architects Giacomo Della Porta and Carlo Maderno, with the construction of the two characteristic bell towers. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Super wide angle image in 16:9 and high definition format.
