He contributed to the popularization flamenco on the international scene and was the first director of the Ballet Nacional de España. Committed to the Communist Party of the Peoples of Spain since the years of the Democratic Transition, he was a member of the Central Committee until his death. He is also symbolically a member of the Communist Party of Cuba, while he regularly travels to this country to present shows there.
