Lion mother and cub in the wild
Two African lionesses rest near a tree. One lioness is asleep on her side while the other sits with her paws in front of her - perhaps ready to pounce. They are beautiful animals, with rippling muscles. They tend to like to stay in groups or herds. These two lionesses look like overgrown cats having a rest. However, they are powerful animals. There two animals are camouflaged to some extent by the golden grass that matches their coats.

Lions have strong, compact bodies and powerful forelegs, teeth and jaws for pulling down and killing prey. Their coats are yellow-gold, and adult males have shaggy manes that range in color from blond to reddish-brown to black. The length and color of a lion's mane is likely determined by age, genetics and hormones.
