During the Lantern Festival, children go out at night carrying paper lanterns and solve riddles on the lanterns In ancient times, the lanterns were fairly simple, and only the emperor and noblemen had large ornate ones. In modern times, lanterns have been embellished with many complex designs. For example, lanterns are now often made in the shape of animals. The lanterns can symbolize the people letting go of their past selves and getting new ones, which they will let go of the next year. The lanterns are almost always red to symbolize good fortune.

Architectural detail of the east Octagonal Stele Pavilion at the Yonghe Temple (or Yonghe Lamasery or Lama Temple) which is a temple and monastery of Tibetan Buddhism in Beijing in China in springtime. Built initially in 1694 during the Qing Dynasty as the residence of Emperor Yongzheng, in 1744 the Qing Dynasty formally changed the status of the place to that of a Lamasery (Monastery of Tibetan Buddhism). The inscriptions are in four languages: Chinese, Mongolian, Tibetan and Manchu. The inscriptions featured in the picture are in Tibetan. To give an exact interpretation in English is difficult and is best left to Tibetan religious historians. The uppermost scripture refers to the name of the stone stele inside. The text underneath refers to the Tibetan mantra of Avalokitesvara.
