The magnificent frescoes by Giotto inside the Basilica di San Francesco (Basilica of Saint Francis), in the medieval heart of Assisi, in Umbria. Built in the Italian Gothic style starting from 1228 and completed in 1253, the Basilica preserves the mortal remains of the Saint of the Poor from 1230. In the image, some of the 28 walls frescoed by Giotto between 1292 and 1305, illustrating the life of the Saint of Assisi, from his vocation to death. Over the centuries Assisi and the spirituality of these places have become a world reference point for peace, tolerance and solidarity between all the peoples and different confessions. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the quality of the olive oil produced in these lands. Rome, Italy - May 12, 2018: The Basilica of the Sacred Heart is located in the Castro Pretorio district, near Termini Station and was built between 1879 and 1887 at the behest of Pope Pius IX who, in 1870, laid the foundation stone of the new building. However, due to the annexation of Rome to the Kingdom of Italy, the work was interrupted; it was only thanks to San Giovanni Bosco that construction could be resumed in 1880 and completed in 1887 by the architect Francesco Vespignani. Orvieto, Province of Terni, Umbria, Italy - 24 april 2023: Interior of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo - The Presbytery - The same Ugolino di Prete Ilario who worked on the frescoes in the Cappella del Corporale frescoed, with many assistants and starting from 1370, the Cappella Maggiore of the church (or presbytery). The frescoes depict Stories from the life of the Madonna, to whom the entire cathedral is dedicated. It is one of the largest surviving fourteenth-century cycles in Italy and dates from a few years after that of the Corporal Chapel. The frescoes of the Annunciation and the Visitation of Mary are late fifteenth-century remakes by Antonio del Massaro, known as il Pastura. In the chapel there is a large four-light window characterized by a remarkable stained glass window, the work of Giovanni di Bonino (1328-1334). In pendant with the fresco decoration, the window is dedicated to the Stories of Mary and Christ. The wooden Crucifix which is placed in the center of the chapel, behind the altar, is the work of Lorenzo Maitani, while the wooden choir is the work of various wood inlay artists headed by Giovanni Ammannati (starting from 1329).
