Rome, Italy, October 19 -- An evening view of some tourists in front of the majestic Roman Pantheon, in the historic and imperial heart of the Eternal City. Built in 27 BC by the Consul Marco Vispanio Agrippa for the emperor Augustus and dedicated to all the Roman divinities, the majestic Pantheon is one of the best preserved Roman structures in the world. Currently owned by the Italian state, this Roman temple preserves the remains of some Italian royalty and the Renaissance painter Raphael. Rome, Italy, July 22 -- A couple of tourists enjoy the sunset light sitting among the ruins of the Trajan's Forum, in the majestic historic heart of Rome. The Trajan's Forum is among the best preserved archaeological areas in Rome, with the remains of the large market built by the emperor and the temples that were part of this sumptuous portion of the great Roman Imperial Forum. In the background, on the left the famous Trajan's Column and on the right the dome of the church of the Santissimo Nome di Maria at the Trajan Forum. Palmyra, Syria- 28 November 2008: Ruins of Palmyra city, Syrian deesert. Dating back to the Neolithic era, the city of Palmyra, was a strategically located oasis first attested in the early second millennium BC as a caravan stop for travelers crossing the Syrian Desert. Mentioned in the Hebrew Bible and the annals of the Assyrian kings, Palmyra was subsequently incorporated into the Seleucid Empire, followed by the Roman Empire which brought it great prosperity. It is saddening that its present Roman ruins, declared by UNESCO as a world heritage site, have come to be endangered in the 21st century by regional military and political strife.

The triumphal arch (Italian: Arco di Settimio Severo), dedicated in AD 203 to commemorate the Parthian victories of Emperor Septimius Severus and his two sons, Caracalla and Publius Septimius Geta, is located at the Northeast end of the Roman Forum.
