Colosseum (in Italian: Colosseo), also known as Amphitheater Flavian (in Latin: Amphitheatrum Flavium; in Italian: Amphitheater Flavio), is an oval amphitheater located in the city center of Rome, capital of Italy. Built with concrete and sand, it is the largest amphitheater ever built and is located to the east of the Roman Forum.\n\nConstruction began under Emperor Vespasian in A.D. 72 and was completed in 1980, under the regime of his successor and heir, Titus. Other changes were made during Domitian's reign (81-96). These three emperors are known as the Flavian dynasty and the amphitheater was named in Latin in this way because of its association with the family name (Flavius).

Close up of part of the Colosseum in Rome, Italy, an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre just east of the Roman Forum
A suggestive and detailed image of the Roman Forums taken from the terrace of the Capitoline Hill or Campidoglio (Roman Capitol), in the historic heart of the Eternal City. In the foreground the Forum of Caesar with the remains of the Temple of Venus Genetrix, while in the background the Forum of Trajan. In the center the Fori Imperiali Boulevard, which connects the Colosseum with the central square of Piazza Venezia. The Roman Forums, one of the largest archaeological areas in the world, represented the political, legal, religious and economic center of the city of Rome, as well as the nerve center of the entire Roman civilization. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Super wide angle image in high definition and 16:9 format.
