Bamako is the capital and largest city of Mali, with a population of 1.8 million. In 2006, it was estimated to be the fastest-growing city in Africa and sixth-fastest in the world. It is located on the Niger River, near the rapids that divide the upper and middle Niger valleys in the southwestern part of the country.

The city was founded in 1632 by English colonists from St. Kitts and Nevis. The settlement has since been the administrative center of Antigua and its neighboring island of Barbuda. From 1663 onwards, colonists from England also began arriving in Saint John's. In the 18th century the city was the headquarters for the part of the Royal Fleet stationed in the Antilles. In 1981, Saint John's became the capital of the newly formed independent state of Antigua and Barbuda.
