Filaments are typically many times longer. This algae is mobile, it moves and twists through the water. San Francisco Bay, California, USA. Live specimen. Wet mount, 40X objective, transmitted brightfield illumination. Nigella damascena, also known as Love-in-a-mist and Devil in the bush, is an annual garden flowering plant, which belongs to the buttercup family Ranunculaceae. Native to southern Europe, north Africa and south-west Asia, it is found on neglected, damp patches of land. Its common name “Love-in-a-mist” comes from the flowers being nestled in a ring of multifid, lacy bracts. The flowers, blooming in early summer, are most commonly different shades of blue, but can be white, pink or pale purple, with 5 to 25 petals.
