Houghton House was built circa 1615 for Mary, Dowager Countess of Pembroke, in a mixture of Jacobean and Classical styles: the ground floors of two Italianate loggias survive, thought to have been designed by Inigo Jones. It is a Grade I listed building. Abandoned in 1794 and stripped (by the owner) of its interiors and roof for sale as building supplies. The house is one mile north-east of Ampthill and eight miles south of Bedford. It is owned by English Heritage and is open to free public access during daylight hours. May 5, 2023.
