On the Harvard University side of Harvard Square stands the Wadsworth House, a   clapboard structure built in 1726 as a home for Harvard presidents. It served as the first headquarters for George Washington, who arrived on July 2, 1775, to take command of the Continental Army, which he did the following day. It is the second oldest building on the Harvard Campus.  From an illustration in the January 1876 issue of Harper's New Monthly Magazine.

Concord, Massachusetts, USA - March 2, 2024: The Old Manse is a historic manse in Concord, Massachusetts notable for its literary associations. The Old Manse was built in 1770 for the Rev. William Emerson, father of minister William Emerson and grandfather of transcendentalist writer and lecturer Ralph Waldo Emerson. n 1842, the American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne rented the Old Manse for $100 a year. The Old Manse The house is located on Monument Street, with the Concord River just behind it. The property neighbors the North Bridge, a part of Minute Man National Historical Park. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 and is open to the public as a nonprofit museum.
