William Emerson, father of minister William Emerson and grandfather of transcendentalist writer and lecturer Ralph Waldo Emerson. n 1842, the American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne rented the Old Manse for $100 a year. The Old Manse The house is located on Monument Street, with the Concord River just behind it. The property neighbors the North Bridge, a part of Minute Man National Historical Park. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 and is open to the public as a nonprofit museum.

This is the home of the oldest continuous Quaker meeting in America, begun in 1656–1657.  Quakers migrated to Cape Cod from Boston to escape Puritan persecution.
