Hampi is located on the Deccan plateau, which is one of the oldest and most stable geographical formations in the world. The plateau comprises rocks dated to be about 2.5 billion years old. Geologically, these rocks are termed as ‘Younger Granites’ and are spread over a 500 km long and 20 km wide belt running north-south. The granitic rocks in the area were formed towards the end of the Archean Era of the geological time scale, due to magmatic action leading to the melting of the older gneissic rocks and intrusion. The thickness of this younger granitic complex varies from 5 to 25 km.

Russia. Altai Territory. A lonely little birch tree, hooked by its roots in a small crack, grows right on a rocky outcrop on the shore of Lake Kolyvan.
Red sandstone, shale and siltstone, petrified wood and caprocks form brilliant, layered monuments in the massive canyon. Hoodoos speckle the mountainsides, along with juniper and cedar, caves and arroyos.

Indigenous people have been carving in rock for thousands of years as a means of written communication. Petroglyphs are either images, designs or symbols chiseled, carved or scratched on the surface of the rock. Many of these carvings have endured over the centuries and are still visible today. The image on the right side of this rock depicts a round face. Modern natives in this area identify this as a Kachina, or spirit being. Research suggests that the Kachina Culture came to this area around 1300AD. Similar Kachina symbols are used in modern Puebloan pottery and weavings which helps make the connection from past to present. We don’t always know the true meaning of these carvings or how to interpret them. And maybe it’s not our place to try. We can however enjoy them for their artistry. These petroglyphs were photographed at Puerco Pueblo in Petrified Forest National Park near Holbrook, Arizona, USA.
Volcanic rock stacked atop existing boulders form an exterior cliff dwelling wall that runs along the side of of a high desert promentory. The Sinagua Indian tribe that selected this site did so for its easily defensible position. Below the wall is a sheer cliff dropping to a long steep hill that descends to a dry riverbed - allowing no access from that side. This wall includes small portals where rocks were omitted so that arrows could be fired through them, permitting concealment from enemy attack. The wall has contains a narrow opening for egress, and the climb to safe level terrain is difficult. Site selection was critical for the Sinagua, and perfectly executed here. This culture combined hunting and gathering with agriculture, but the latter was challenging in this arrid wilderness terrain. The exact site location, which requires considerable effort to reach, is intentionally omitted. Its estimated age dates to 1300 AD - 1400 AD.
