A British Motor Fuel Ration coupon book dated 1957 for a motor cycle over 250cc. Some of the cover has been cut off, showing part of a coupon inside for half a unit of fuel. These books were issued during the ‘Suez Crisis’ of 1956-57, when petrol rationing was brought in. Egypt’s President Nasser seized the running of the Suez Canal from a Franco-British company after being refused money to build the Aswan High Dam because of his links with the USSR. Consequently, supplies of petrol were affected and it was necessary to impose petrol rationing for five months.
