Arizona doesn't have many natural ponds and lakes. To provide water for their livestock, early ranchers dug stock tanks in the national forest open range. Now that the national forests are used for recreation these old tanks provide ideal habitat for wildlife as well as popular destinations for hiking. The Apache National Forest and the Sitgreaves National Forest encompass over two million acres of Arizona and western New Mexico.  They are administered as one national forest.  The Sitgreaves National Forest was named for Captain Lorenzo Sitgreaves, a topographical engineer who conducted the first government expedition across Arizona in the early 1850’s. The Apache National Forest was named for the native tribes that lived in the area.
