The church was built of the local ginger-coloured carrstone, with some flint and limestone, on a slight hill during the 11th or 12th centuries, with parts replaced or enlarged in the 14th or 15th centuries: it fell into disuse in the 18th century. Bawsey is a sparsely populated village near King’s Lynn which was once closer to The Wash than it is now, the coastline having moved over the centuries.
