The Soviet troop liverated the camp on January 27 in 1945. In the following decades it became a symbol of the Holocaust. In 1947, Poland founded a museum on the site of Auschwitz I and II, and in 1979 it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Fenced abandoned houses with barred windows in ghost town Manheim near surface mine Hambach in North Rhine-Westfalia. The mining and energy company RWE has plans to expand the lignite mine Hambach.
