Lymantria dispar, sometimes known as the gypsy moth, is a species of moth in the Erebidae family. Lymantria dispar is subdivided into several subspecies, with subspecies such as L. d. dispar and L. d. japonica being clearly identifiable without ambiguity. Lymantria dispar has been introduced to several continents and is now found in Europe, Africa, Asia, North America and South America. The polyphagous larvae live on a variety of deciduous and coniferous trees and can cause severe damage in years of mass reproduction. Due to these features, Lymantria dispar is listed among the world's 100 most invasive alien species (source Wikipedia).\n\nThis Picture is made during a light catch in the South of Limburg half way of August 2021. Sphinx pinastri, the pine hawk-moth, is a moth of the family Sphingidae. It is found in Palearctic realm and sometimes the Nearctic realm. This species has been found in Scotland but is usually found in England. The species was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae. \nThe larvae feed on Scots pine, Swiss pine, Siberian pine and Norway spruce. \nDescription:\nThe wings of Sphinx pinastri are grey with black dashes. The wingspan is 70–89 mm. The moth flies from April to August depending on the location. \nThe back of the thorax is grey with two dark bands around both sides. \nLife cycle:\nThe females lay their eggs in groups of two or three along pine or spruce needles (source Wikipedia).\n\nThis Picture is made during a Long Weekend in the South of Belgium in June 2019.
