Photo taken towards the northwest of the Coquille crest 1556m in the commune of Pontis.\n\nThe chapel, well known to tourists, is the only building located at an altitude of 783 m saved from the waters of the lake, in fact its maximum elevation is 780 m. The first chapel was built on this motte in the 11th century then destroyed by the soldiers of the Duke of Savoy in 1692... Rebuilt, it became the place, on September 29, for Saint-Michel, of a large procession which brings together the inhabitants neighboring villages.\n\nThe year 1955 saw the start of construction of the earthen dam; the work will last 5 years with the filling of the lake in 1961. The primary purpose of the dam is to produce electricity but also to regulate the tumultuous waterways of the Durance and the Ubaye, moreover, this reserve of water of 28.2 km2 will make it possible to irrigate, via the Durance canal (visible in the image), the fields located downstream of the dam, it will also supply drinking water to many municipalities in the south-east. The dam straddles the departments of Hautes-Alpes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence
