A lock on a man-made tributary diverting water from the natural river to the east  to overcome the annual variances in water depth on the river in order to maintain the shipping trade along the Mississippi River in the central United States.  This aerial view is just outside of St. Louis, Missouri on the Illinois side of the river.
Much roiling water is emptied via a spillway system in the locks in Ballard, an area of Seattle, Washington.
