Bardhaman, West Bengal, 04/13/2023:\n\nIn this picture people are preparing themselves for Charak Puja folk dance by painting their face. \n\nCharak is a Hindu folk festival held in honor of the deity Shiva. The festival is observed in the Indian state of West Bengal, and in Bangladesh on the last day of the month of Chaitra. \n\nThe very idea of being in a place where people flock together to enjoy around the village and a place where the photographers from the city are not treated as outsiders, fills us with joy. The very own devotion brought people to gather at the temple area to do the Charak puja preparation as per their rituals. They wash their feet on the road soon after making their god idol sit in a palanquin. It was a total bliss, witnessing such a unique festival. \nThe festival has always been known for its ‘non-elite’ nature, and is celebrated by non-Brahmin communities. A group of sanyasis form a queue to give respectable welcome to their major priest, Buroshiv who used to guide them to worshipping Charak God and observing all the important rituals. Charak Puja has its own special place. It is believed that the celebration leads to prosperity in the coming year, wiping out all the sufferings and pains of the present year. Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti are worshipped along with the Charak tree on the day Pooja.
