Close up shot of a male Common Eider Duck. The eider is the UK's heaviest duck and its fastest flying. It is a true seaduck, rarely found away from coasts where its dependence on coastal molluscs for food has brought it into conflict with mussel farmers. Eiders are highly gregarious and usually stay close inshore, riding the swell in a sandy bay or strung out in long lines out beyond the breaking waves.

The Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola) is a small migratory sea duck. They are among the smallest of the American ducks. Adult males are mostly white with a black back. Their head is iridescent green and purple with a large white patch behind the eye. Females are grey with a black back and a small white patch behind the eye. Most buffleheads winter in protected coastal water or open inland water. Their breeding habitat is wooded lakes and ponds in the boreal forest of Alaska and Canada. Buffleheads take advantage of their small size by being able to utilize the nesting cavities made by woodpeckers. They are diving ducks that forage underwater for insects, crustaceans and mollusks. This male bufflehead was photographed while swimming in Walnut Canyon Lakes near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
