World Peace Pagoda (Stupa)\nLocated outside the main compound, but easily accessible by bike, the impressive gleaming-white World Peace Pagoda, one of the world's greatest stupas, was constructed by Japanese Buddhists at a cost of US$1 million. The shining golden statue depicts the Buddha in the posture he assumed when he was born. Near the base of the stupa is the grave of a Japanese monk murdered by anti-Buddhist extremists during the construction of the monument.

Lumbini, nestled in Nepal’s Rupandehi District, cradles profound significance. It is the exact spot where Queen Maya gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama—later known as the Buddha—around 623 BCE. The Mayadevi Temple marks this sacred event. Monuments, including the Ashoka Pillar, dot the landscape. The Holy Pond, Puskarini, whispers ancient rituals. UNESCO recognizes Lumbini as a World Heritage Site.

The age of the internal buildings is estimated to be around 2,500 years. The dominant element of the temple complex is the Buddhist stupa with the painted eyes, which is clearly visible from Kathmandu and is flanked by two Hindu towers. As in many other places in Kathmandu, Buddhist and Hindu places of worship are closely intertwined in Swayambhunath. The Eyes of Buddha are painted on all four sides of the harmika cube at the top of the stupa to symbolize the Buddha's wisdom seeing all things in all four cardinal directions. The nose symbol stands for Nirvana, the small circle is the 'third eye' of Buddha, symbol of spiritual awakening of knowledge and wisdom.
