Johnston Gate was built in 1889 and named in honor of Samuel Johnston, a former Harvard overseer who contributed to its construction. It was designed by McKim, Mead, and White in a Georgian Revival style. \n\nThe gate features a Neoclassical design with columns and a pediment. It serves as a grand entrance to Harvard Yard, welcoming students, faculty, and visitors. Students traditionally pass through Johnston Gate during commencement and convocation ceremonies, marking significant milestones in their Harvard careers. It's also a popular spot for students and visitors to take photos and admire the architectural beauty of the gate and its surroundings.
