The flags of Italy, the European Union and the Italian Presidency fly on the bell tower of the Palazzo del Quirinale (Quirinal Palace), in the historic heart of Rome. The Quirinal Palace is currently the official seat of the President of the Italian Republic, elected every seven years by the Parliament. In the foreground, one of the monumental statues of the Fountain of the Dioscuri, Castor and Pollux, whose origins date back to Ancient Rome and come from the Baths of the Emperor Constantine. The fountain is located in the center of Piazza del Quirinale (Quirinal Square), in front of the Presidential Palace. Built in neoclassical style on the Quirinal hill between 1573 and 1583 as the summer residence of Pope Gregory XIII, this palace over the centuries has been the residence of the Popes (1605-1870), the residence of the King of Italy (1871-1946) and official seat of the Presidency of the Republic (from 1946 to today). Some of the most important Italian architects and artists participated in its construction and decoration, including Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Carlo Maderno, Guido Reni and Domenico Fontana. The Quirinal Palace, with an extension of 110,000 square meters, is the sixth largest building in the world. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. A portion of Piazza Venezia in the historic center of Rome from the Altare della Patria National Monument, in the heart of the Eternal City.
