Rome, Italy, November 30 -- The Contarelli Chappel with the triptych of paintings on the life of Saint Matthew by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, inside the church of San Luigi dei Francesi (St. Louis of the French), in the historic and baroque heart of Rome. Built between 1518 and 1589 by the architects Giacomo Della Porta and Domenico Fontana, the church was consecrated on 8 October 1589. This Catholic temple is the national church in Rome of France, dedicated to the figure of King St. Louis IX. Caravaggio painted this triptych between 1599 and 1600, illustrating The Vocation of Saint Matthew (left), The Inspiration of Saint Matthew (center) and The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew (right). The frescoes, depicting the Stories of the Virgin, were painted by Filippo Lippi between 1467 and 1469.
