Thousands of Monarch Butterflies hibernate in a tree in Mexico. The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is a conservation area and World Heritage Site within the wintering grounds of most of the monarch butterflies that migrate from east of the Rocky Mountains to central Mexico. It is estimated that up to one billion butterflies hibernate here. The Santuario Mariposa Monarca reserve is located in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt pine-oak forests ecoregion on the border of Michoac and estado de Mexico.

Fall Migrating Monarch Butterflies at Point Pelee Ontario Canada

Monarch butterfly sanctuary in San José del Rincón, State of Mexico. Each year, butterflies travel more than 2,500 miles from the forests of the United States and Canada, where they reproduce, to the forests of central Mexico, where they hibernate. Mexico has a protected natural area known as the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere, located in the states of Michoacán and the State of Mexico. It is currently recognized by UNESCO as a natural world heritage site.
