![Opi (Opjë IPA: [ˈopjə], in Opian dialect) is an Italian town of 393 inhabitants in the province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo. The medieval village is included in the protected area of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise national park. The town is located in the Alto Sangro basin, in the middle of the mountainous group of the Marsicani mountains, in the center of a mountainous amphitheater formed to the north-east by Mount Marsicano (2,245m asl) and to the south-east by Mount Amaro (1,862m asl) and from Mount Petroso (2,249 m asl). The main watercourse that crosses the municipal territory is the Sangro river which rises on the slopes of Mount Morrone del Diavolo (1,602 m a.s.l.), near the town of Gioia Vecchio. The river, after having crossed the flat area of alluvial origin, known as Le Prata, enters a gorge between the Colle di Opi (1,250 m asl) and Mount Marrone (1,354 m asl) from where it continues its path along the high val di Sangro. The Fondillo stream, one of the first tributaries of the Sangro river, which gives its name to the homonymous valley, originates from one of the numerous karst springs present in the Opiano territory. In the Opiano territory there are other sources such as those of Giove, Lecine, Ortunno, Pietrobove, Tornareccia and Visco. It enjoys a cold climate in winter and cool in summer. Due to the exposure to the western humid currents, it is one of the wettest inhabited centers in Abruzzo with rainy and snowy precipitations that often exceed 1,500 mm per year.
