Baja California, Mexico, January 04 -- A representative of the Kumeyaay Indian community with traditional clothes visit a sacred area in the Indian reserve near the border between Mexico and the United States in the Tecate region in the state of Baja California, northern Mexico. The Kumeyaay, also known as Tipai-Ipai or Kumiai, are a tribe of indigenous peoples of the Americas who live between northern Mexico and southern California, along a binational territory straddling the border which is considered essential for their survival. The Kumeyaay people are known as the oak people, a tree considered sacred and a source of sustenance, warmth and protection.

This Powwow took place in Chilliwack, British Columbia on July 29 2017. The powwow is an enthusiastic gathering of First Nations communities, honouring their culture, displaying their regalia,  beating of their drums and dancing. Two dancers pausing between dances.
This great Kiva stands on top of a small hill and is partly above ground. Measuring 20 meters in diameter and 4 to 5 meters deep, making it one of the largest known great kivas. Kivas are ceremonial places in Puebloan culture, as well as symbols of the cosmos. At sunrise on the summer solstice, a beam of light from a northeastern opening in the kiva precisely illuminates a niche in the far wall. Chaco Culture National Historical Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Centre in New Mexico.

This Powwow was celebrated on the Capilano Reserve, West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on 13-14 July, 2013. The Squamish Nation's 30th Annual Powwow was a gathering of First Nations communities to honour their culture, share, respect, dance and drum. Their heritage is respected by all ages.

Powwows are celebrations where First Nations gather to honour and share their rich heritage and traditions with music, dance and beautifully vibrant regalia. There were vendors with handmade leather work, drums, jewelry, t-shirts 'every child matters', bannock, salmon. The general public is welcome.
