ARABIAN SEAâ The USS Albuquerque SSN-706 participates in a photo-exercise Sept. 10, 2006 in the North Arabian Sea. U.S. and Pakistani forces are conducting a bilateral exercise in the Northern Arabian Sea and in territorial waters of Pakistan as part of exercise INSPIRED UNION 2006. Exercise INSPIRED UNION enhances interoperability and tactical proficiency between coalition and regional forces, which may be used as part of regional maritime security operations. MSO set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment.

The USS Nautilus (SSN-571) holds a significant place in history as the world's first operational nuclear-powered submarine. It was constructed by General Dynamics Electric Boat Division in Groton, Connecticut. Its keel was laid on June 14, 1952, and it was launched on January 21, 1954.\n\nAfter 25 years of service, the USS Nautilus was decommissioned on March 3, 1980. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1982. The Nautilus is preserved as a museum ship at the Submarine Force Library and Museum in Groton, Connecticut. It is open to the public and serves as an educational exhibit, highlighting the history and impact of nuclear-powered submarines.

A U.S. Navy Los Angeles-class submarine undergoes testing on Thursday at the Southeast Alaska Acoustic Measurment Facility  in West Behm Canal. Two U.S. Navy patrol boats, each equipped with two M240 machine guns, guarded the vessel and the surrounding restricted area. One support ship was also seen in the area. The facility runs tests to study sounds emitted from a vessel while at idle in the docking bay and within the underway site, which is the area between Betton Island and Helm Bay and extends north to Point Francis. SEAFAC runs tests on both submarine and surface ships. Results are used to further develop and advance stealth technology.
