Nuuk / Godthåb, Sermersooq, Greenland / Kalaallit Nunaat: aerial view of the Greenlandic capital, the city, Nuuk bay and the port - Nuuk (Kalaallisut for headland), with around 20,000 inhabitants, is the largest city of Greenland, a self-governing territory in the Kingdom of Denmark. The Godthaab colony, later Nuuk, was founded in 1728 by the Danish-Norwegian priest, Hans Egede, sent by the Danish king to find the Norsemen. Hans Egede instead met the Greenlandic Inuit who had lived in the area for centuries. The colony Godthab was thus established in the settlement of Nuuk, more specifically in the area around Ippiup Qaava. Nuuk is located at the mouth of the extensive fjord system Nuup Kangerlua on the west coast of Greenland approximately 240 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. Nuuk is the main town in Sermersooq Municipality, the size of France in terms of area and with only 25,000 inhabitants.

The numerous bunkers on the beach are remnants from World War II. The Germans built them as part of the Atlantic rampart that was meant to protect the Germans against an Allied invasion.\nThe bunkers were built several hundred metres up in the dunes. Since then, the sea has eroded the coast and laid bare the bunkers so almost all of them are now down on the beaches.
