Boats and their tenders are docked and moored in the harbor at Northeast Harbor, Maine on a sunny September day. Northeast Harbor is a village on Mount Desert Island, in Maine, United States. The village is a quiet summer destination for rich and famous summer residents, including the Rockefeller family. Northeast Harbor has lovely summer mansions and a beautiful protected harbor for the residents’ yachts. The village is located on the southeastern side of Somes Sound, which is a very deep body of water that almost splits Mount Desert Island in two. The mountains and trails of Acadia National Park are nearby. This side of Mount Desert Island is referred to as the “quiet side” because it is more remote and relaxed than Bar Harbor.
