A small house on a small island in Iceland
Smiling female explorer with long hair, wearing stripe shirt and orange shorts staying between old viking houses on the fresh green meadow looking at glacial lake Lovatnet in Loen, Western Norway, Scandinavia
The land on which the house stands was of type known in Icelandic as purrabúð, which meant that tis occupants were forbidden from keeping any kind of domestic animals, including cows and sheep. As a result, they were completely dependent on the sea for their existence.\nDuring its 37 years of habitation, Stekkjarkot was occupied by only 3 couples and their families. Built during the years 1855-1877, it was abandoned only 30 years later. Refurbished in 1917, it was abandoned again in 1927. The high point of its history as a farm probably came in 1921, when its tennants finally managed to gain permission to keep a few sheep.

Beehive huts speckle the side of a road that winds along Ireland’s Dingle Peninsula. These old houses, all worn and battered by time, stand as humble testaments to the island’s medieval stonemasons. The exact age of the houses is uncertain, and different theories date them anywhere from the eighth to 12th centuries AD. The builders of these beehive houses didn’t use any mortar. Instead, they meticulously stacked rings of stone one on top of the other, positioning each layer a little further inward until a snug, pointed roof was formed to cap the structure.
