The deer ked, Lipoptena cervi, lives as an ectoparasite on deer, moose and other cervids, burrowing through the fur and sucking the blood of the host. While the deer ked may on occasion bite humans, which may result in intense itching around the bite mark, the ked cannot utilise humans as a host. Robust tall, almost hairless perennial, to 2m; stems hollow, ridged, generally winged with purple. Leaves 2-3 pinnate, with oblong, sharply toothed segments; upper leaves reduced to large inflated sheaths and partially enclosing the developing umbels. Flowers white or pinkish, 2mm, in umbels 3-15cm across, with numerous rays; bracts few and soon falling, or absent. Fruit oval, (with 3 outstanding ridges) 4-5mm, with membranous wings.

A Mydas Fly (Mydas clavatus) on a Rattlesnake Master (Eryngium yuccifolium) wildflower in Indiana. They are a wasp mimic. In the Midwest the rattlesnake master is a favorite nectar source for this insect. It is also known as a clubbed mydas fly. The Midas fly, has a golden band across its abdomen, and for that reason it was named for the Phrygian king Midas.
