Classic example of a cirque, a depression which collects and compresses through gravity the snow that falls into it. Glacial ice will fill the cirque until it overflows through a gap and begin to move due to a combination of slope, gravity and pressure. This is how glaciers form. Stitched panorama made of 6 pictures from the Eggishorn. The Aletsch Glacier is the largest glacier in the Alps. It has a length of about 23 km (14 mi) and covers more than 120 square kilometres (46 sq mi) in the eastern Bernese Alps in the Swiss canton of Valais. The Aletsch Glacier is composed of three smaller glaciers converging at Concordia, where its thickness is estimated to be near 1 km (3,300 ft). It then continues towards the Rhone valley before giving birth to the Massa River.

Glaciers are sensitive indicators of global warming. The photograph shows the Moreno Glacier where it enters Lago Argentino, Patagonia. The water in the lake is around 14ºC in summer, melting the ice face from beneath, leaving huge masses of ice hanging. As the photograph shows, when the overhang weight is larger than the shear force strength of the ice wall, gigantic ice block crash into Lago Argentino, eroding the glacial front wall. Moreno Glacier if one of the few glaciers in the world where the erosion at the front is still slower than the replenishment from behind. Global warming is steadily warming the surface waters of Lago Argentino leading to a more rapid erosion at the glacial front. In this sense the Moreno Glacier is a benchmark for global warming since once the Moreno Glacier starts to retreat, global warming impact will be global.
