This is a stand of Spanish (or French) lavender flowers ((Lavandula stoechas)), also known as topped lavender. Taken at this distance, the result is a pleasing purple background. The bloom in the middle is in sharp focus. (Lavandula stoechas) occurs naturally in hot Mediterranean countries, and is not as winter-hardy as some species. Nevertheless, this specimen is flowering in the south of England. Compared with common lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) it produces harsher and more resinous essential oils. It is used commercially in air fresheners and insecticides, while the flower spikes have been used as a medicine for headaches, irritability, feverish colds and nausea. Applied externally, they serve as a herbal medicine for wounds, rheumatic pain and as an insect repellent. In addition to their pleasant aroma and scented essential oils, lavender flowers also have a restful and calming purple colour.
