Aerial view of Lake Magadi Lake in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya. Lake Magadi is the southernmost lake in the Kenyan Rift Valley, north of Tanzania's Lake Natron. The Rift Valley contains a chain of volcanoes, some of which are still active, and many other lakes such as the Turkana, Baringo, Bogoria and Nakuru. During the dry season Lake Magadi is 60% covered by soda and is known for its wading birds. During the rainy season, a thin layer of brine covers much of the saline pan, but this evaporates rapidly leaving a vast expanse of white salt that cracks to produce large polygons. The lake is recharged by saline hot springs that discharge into alkaline lagoons around the lake margins and is very rich in blue-green algae, which feed insects, small crustaceans and massive flocks of lesser flamingos (Phoenicoparrus minor). Altogether it forms a very peculiar mineral and colour-rich landscape. The lake is featured in film The Constant Gardener, which is based on the book of the same name by John le Carré although in the film the shots are supposed to be at Lake Turkana. Currently the area is inhabited by the cattle-herder Masai tribes, but the relics of many hominids have been found in the escarpments.

During the late Jurassic Period about 150 million years ago, dinosaurs congregated along the shores of a vast freshwater lake in what is now southeastern Colorado. They left behind large trackways in the mud which shows up today eroded by river waters as over 1300 dinosaur footprints in limestone along the Purgatoire River. Most of these tracks are by made by herding Apatosaurus or sauropod dinosaurs. Part of the Picket Wire Canyonlands, the tracksite is the largest dinosaur tracksite in North America.

The Painted Hills are one of the three units that comprise the John Day Fossil Beds. Take time to also visit the Clarno Unit, with Mars-like pillars formed by waterfalls and volcanic sludge, and the Sheep Rock Unit, where fossils of plants and animals like saber-toothed cats are on display at the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center. The hills get their name from the delicately colored stratifications in the soil and the yellows, golds, blacks and reds of the Painted Hills are best seen in the late afternoon. Tones and hue may appear to change from one visit to another, as the claystone differ with ever-changing light and moisture levels. Once you see them for yourself, it’s pretty easy to understand why the Painted Hills are one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon.
