The wide variety of weapons and equipment used throughout the course of the second world war make for fascinating research and exploration - The PIAT or Projector, Infantry, Anti Tank was a spring operated, front loaded anti tank gun that lobbed a charge at enemy armour. It proved to be quite ineffective at range, and troops had to be dangerously close to hope that the round would penetrate. \n\nIn a similar role was the mortar; a key component of any infantry unit, the concept is simple: front load explosive rounds, a small charge then launches the round at the trajectory of the mortar tube. Mortars ended up being one of the most deadly weapons of the second world war.\n\nThis image was taken at an outdoor event over the weekend of 11th-13th August 2023, where reenactors, living historians, and members of the public can come to experience what life was like during the second world war, with live demonstrations, battle reenactments, and static displays from all over the world.

The standard Heavy Machine Gun used during the war by the British and Empire forces was the Vickers. This simple modification of the Maxim Machine-gun first entered service with the British army in 1912 as the ‘Gun, Machine, Vickers, .303-inch Mark I’.\n\nThey proved such a successful and reliable weapon they remained in service virtually unchanged until 1968. Its rate of fire was about 450rpm, but this could vary with individual weapons.\n\nThis image was taken at an outdoor event over the weekend of 11th-13th August 2023, where reenactors, living historians, and members of the public can come to experience what life was like during the second world war, with live demonstrations, battle reenactments, and static displays from all over the world.

Before the advent of modern plastics, everything in WW2 had to be shipped and transported in either wood or metal crates and boxes. The large box possibly carried a machine gun, the smaller wooden crates and metal containers likely carried ammunition, while the canvas bags and pouches on the floor are an infantryman's webbing: His personal equipment which he wore into battle.\n\nThis image was taken at an outdoor event over the weekend of 11th-13th August 2023, where reenactors, living historians, and members of the public can come to experience what life was like during the second world war, with live demonstrations, battle reenactments, and static displays from all over the world.
