Ajo Plaza, located in Ajo, Arizona, is a significant historical and cultural landmark with a rich history tied to the development of the town and the region. The Plaza, designed in a Spanish Colonial Revival style, serves as a focal point, and reflects the unique character of the town. Ajo Plaza was constructed in the early 20th century during the boom of the copper mining industry. The Plaza quickly became the social and commercial hub of Ajo. It housed various shops, a post office, a theater, and community spaces, catering to the needs of the town's residents. \nThe New Cornelia Branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad, completed in 1916, connected Ajo with Gila Bend and facilitated the movement of goods and people. The history of Ajo is closely linked to the arrival of the railroad, which was crucial for transporting copper ore from the mines to processing facilities and markets. While the primary function of the railroad was to support mining operations, it also provided passenger services, linking Ajo to broader rail networks and making it more accessible. Despite the decline of copper mining in the last century, Ajo Plaza remains a historical landmark, symbolizing the town's mining heritage and its connection to the broader economic history of the region.
