Built in 1290 as the seat of the Council of Nine and of the executive power of the city, the majestic Palazzo Pubblico is still the seat of the municipal government. The Torre del Mangia was built between 1338 and 1348 on a project by Giovanni Balduccio, known as Mangia, becoming the symbol of the political and military power of Siena compared to its rival Florence. Center of the city life since 1169, Piazza del Campo or simply Campo is one of the most beautiful and famous squares in the world for its particular shell shape. In this space every year the seventeen historical neighborhoods of Siena compete in the Palio, one of the oldest horse races in the world. Siena is one of the most beautiful Italian cities of art, in the heart of the Tuscan hills, visited for its immense artistic and historical heritage and for its famous popular traditions.
