The ancient Roman city of Pompeii was buried under 5 m of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and therefor has been largely preserved for todays science and archeology. Even scientific excavations are still ongoing, the site is mostly recovered and open to visitors.\nThis picture shows the main amphitheater of Pompeii. In the background (right side of the picture), the Mount Vesuvius is visible, but mainly covered by clouds. Few tourists exploring the theater.
